The title is long, but it gives you a good idea what this list is about. Pokemon has seen many innovations from Red and Blue, but a lot of those came way back in Gen II (Gold/Silver), so let's count down what I think are the best!

BTW I am on the Twitter https://twitter.com/TheJrose11 - give me a follow if you'd like I ask questions from time to time.

I, found a shiny in gen 2 other than the red Gyarados. It was in the burned tower, a gastly, a shiny gastly, only normal type attacks, 3 pokéballs, i didn't catch it 😣

Did anyone else not know that Pineco could get Pin Missle via breeding. So egg moves did exist back in Gen 2. I learned that by watching a YouTuber's (Scykoh) Pokémon Crystal LP.

Gen 2 is a great generation!

Dude the BEST innovation is the shortcut for items.
Gen 1, you need bicycle? Start, Item, Bicycle (that of course you had put at the top of the list)
Gen 2, just press SELECT fuk yeah

Same thing if you need to fish for a long time.

My first shiny was a ditto., actually.

My first shiny was a Nidoran Male in HeartGold. It was my second game (first was Platinum, I never finished it though) I was a young'un and had no idea what it was, and I killed it

amnesia @slowbro: +2 to both special stats in gen 1
pokemon colosseum /xd - get yourself a grass type with solar beam and a faster pokemon with sunny day and the double battle system lets you fire off 1 turn solar beams

I agree with #1. But remember when they introduced fairy typing? It's obnoxious.

Shinies were in gen 1.

not an innovation exactly...more quality of life,
but being able to catch pokemon when your current box was full.
nothing more traumatic to 8 year old me than struggling through cerulean cave catching a few thing along the way, getting to mewtwo, saving and then catching it.
"Mewtwo was captured...but the PC was full" shudders

What about being able to hotkey usable items? IE: Press SELECT to use your bike. It's an innovation that feels like such a no brainer, but really makes playing the game SOOO much better. It ranks pretty close to the segmented backpack. I remember the one time I went back and tried to pay Blue after playing Gold and I found it so clunky having to go back into that backpack to and searching for my bike. I

What about the pokeball icon indicating that you've caught a Pokémon before? Or the experience bar?

The special split hurt mewtwo a ton though. In generation 1 I personally think mewtwo was the most powerful pokemon essecially with amnesia because unlike in generation 2 onwards it doubled special in one turn. This made mewtwo the biggest wall possible. Not to mention recover after that so even if chipped down a ton of health it could instantly bring that back. I know alakazam also had recover but I don't think Alakazam could learn amnesia so I'd say mewtwo was better but agree with your reasons but the counter being another mewtwo or an alakazam I guess. My favorite pokemon are espeon and umbreon though but sadly from what I can tell they aren't too good competively but I did enjoy raising them to level 100 in colosseum as that game was really fun. Also my first real shiny wasn't until white 2 I think with me randomly encountering a shiny rattata I was a bit disappointed (especially after seeing what the shiny for raticate was going to be so I decided to give it an everstone to keep the good gold shiny rather than the barely differing red shiny haha. I think because of the battles I did I statisically battled enough times that I was bound to just get a shiny by that point (I'd played pretty much all the past games) but it was still pretty cool since I don't know whether I'll ever get another one besides the one that's pretty much always shiny for the red gyrados. Last thing but fun/sad fact: The red gyrados isn't actually absolutely shiny locked the first time. If it was going to shiny (on top of it being shiny) the game actually makes it a normal gyrados which seems kinda crazy. I'm not sure if the game is thinking shiny triggered + shiny = untrigger the shininess or if it was some glitch though if you did come across the blue gyrados that would pretty disappointing.

I got an shiny flabebe streak

Poke Pelago in SM is very unnapreciated. Even if its slow i dont have much time for pokemon so the Isle Evelup let me lvl up Pokemon to 100 i didnt really want to grind for.

Another crucial innovation in Gen 2? The experience bar. Gen 1 was annoying in this regard because you had to constantly check your Pokemon's stats chart to find out when it would level up, and having a high-leveled Pokemon meant it would take quite some time to get it up to a new level. In Gen 2 however, that option was still available but now you had a visual indicator of experience which could be observed in battle. The one weird part of the bar was that it moved from right to left, whereas in later games it moved from left to right.

Loving that intro bro!

You forgot about the XP bar that appears in battle! That helped so you don't have to look into the Pokemon's stats to see when they'll level up

Yeah, God bless that Move Deleter. Thanks to him, I can be a scumbag with Last Resort, Z-Conversion Porygon-Z. X)

I did find a shiny in gen 2, and it was before the Gyardos too :) It was in the unknown places, after doing the first kabuto puzzle. 5 or so Unknowns in, and (I think it was) a 'P' appeared. It sparkled, and was kind of blue. I literally had no idea what it was. I caught it though, and didn't even think about it when I ran into Gya. Eventually I reset the game anyways, but yea :p

Watching this really just makes me wish there were a new pokemon stadium game. At least a pokemon colleseum game. I think those games have to be some of favorite games, and pokemon games of all time.

Good list, although I'm surprised there was no mention of the EXP bar and Kurt's unique pokeballs (even if they were broken in Gen 2) as they paved the way to many great special pokeballs in the games today.

I think the physical Special split in gen IV was the BIGGEST innovation

The first pokemon I caught, and the first shiny I caught: Dunsparce. I love it, and I don't care about the popular opinion on it. I will always love it ^-^

From the innovation side... Yes gen 2 was truly one of the most importent gens of them All.

But the Games itself? Sorry personally they are my least favorite of them All.

My first ever shiny was a shiny meowth in Silver. But I didn't catch that one because my 8-year old self thought "I don't want a meowth!" So I just ran from it.

My second shiny ever was in SoulSilver, and thankfully, I was old enough to appreciate a shiny when I saw one. When I was grinding my team for the Elite Four in victory road, I found a shiny graveller. I was so paranoid it was going to explode, but it didn't. I caught it and nicknamed it RollinTurd. It literally looked like one, especially after I evolved it into Golem.

I love Alakazam/ Kadabra not because they were OP in gen I. My first game was FireRed, back in that day I weren't good at Pokemon, I love him because he always escape my pokeball with teleport and when I finally caught one, I decided but him in my team alobg with Charizard, since I weren't good at pkmn, when I reach pokeleague my main pokemon were Charizard, Kadabra and Jolteon so I havr to fill my slots with Zapdos, Articuno and nearby wild Fearow (Moltres wasn't catchable at that time in the game) since there were a lot flying type in my party, it was a hard time to become champion and I love Kadabra/Alakazam because beside Charizard which was the starter, Kadabra/Alakazam was my first real partner to get through the game (not count rattata or pidgey ...because I just caught but not use them as a real team member)
