I was thinking of going for vega instead of a 1080 or 1080ti for my 1st PC build because with the way I saw how the r9 290 performs in today's games, I was thinking Vega might have a longer lifespan just like the 290 did. But after seeing this, I'm pretty much certain they just took a Fury X card from their shelves, put in a few bits here and there and said, "Hey, this is the new Vega 64." Now, I'm pretty certain I'll go for 1080ti unless I hear of any new updates on the fucking vega

Digital Foundry's "feeling" that people buy GPU's for the leap out of the box and not the promise tomorrow is not applicable to me. I buy new GPU's after 4-5years. I want a card that'll still perform well 4-5 years later. The r9 290 was my best buy ever. I hope Vega will do the same :)

I was going to buy Vega 64 but I changed my mind... I just ordered GTX 1080.

Any card can destroy 1080ti

Compare Vega 64 to a founder's addition 1080gt. The current Vega offerings are not tweaked like most of the 1080 cards.

FreeSync anyone? Richard never mentioned it at all. I’m strongly in camp Green, but GSync monitors still carry a huge price premium that FreeSync monitors don’t. That is maybe the biggest advantage to camp Red in this discussion and shame on DF for not mentioning it at all. Shills.

Doesn't freesync or g-sync only affect the smoothness of the graphics and not affect FPS?

Don't worry, when I bought my 480 was new and worse than my 5 yo card, some games were unplayable. After a few updates magic happen, all my unplayable games were reborne in a shocking way. From a disaster I found myself with a unbeliveble good gpu. 30% better in a month. Amd doesn't work well with intel cpu, gigabyte mobos and so on. Nvidia works great with intel. I tested this on a great number of builds. This is the untold thing, cause all they want is to sell cards regardless off the ram, cpu, power input, mobo. New cards haves to learn games and after u get an optimised update for it will actually work how they suposed to. Wy razer don.t mix shit up, and others?

Can someone please help me? I have RX Vega 64 in a motherboard that is compatible, but every time I try to install the driver it crashes. What CPU do I need and how much ram? I only have 8gb ram and am using a 2 Core CPU. I have a 1200w power supply. Please help!

Honestly Radeon sucks

The 'R' looks like Richie rich

Massively disappointing, I ignored the urge to buy Pascal all year and then when Vega finally offers me an upgrade to replace my Fury pro with the pricing forces me to buy smart and I end up with a non reference 1080.

what nvidia gtx 1080 did you use? I don't think you can compare a reference model with a custom model.

My Gtx 1080 WINS!!!!!

yea we won't see vega on gaming laptop. if AMD dont fix the energy consumption

In short terms AMD is shit and always will be.. no balls to go big.

AMD Vega 64 is just a child compared to Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti.

I think amd has too much to worry about. Nvidia is lucky because they are mostly gpu focused and Intel is mainly cpu focus. Its hard to be the best at both things lol

Excellent video. Thank you guys for your quality content.

Hi would appreciate if you can answer. My i7 6700K oc to 4.6Ghz DRAM 2667mhz stock bottlenecking my GTX 1080Ti??

My RX Vega 64 rocks coupled with the Ryzen 5 1600X

@DigitalFoundry I would like to see the same comparison with Ryzen 1600@4.0 and 3200MHz RAM with 1440p resolution with these same cards!

your videos are all top quality...thank you :)

While PC benchmarks, console peasants argues who has the bigger TFLOP lol.

What about under volting as thats shown to improve fps etc.

I think Vega was what Polaris was to the mid and lower range gpus with the rx 400 and 500 series but for the high end.

Plus it's only came out so I guess patches and optimisation etc.

You gain a lot of performance when the card is under water- 1580-1780mhz is a big difference compared to 1280-1580mhz, plus, jumping the Ram from 940mhz-1060mhz is another big jump.

Since I put my Vega in my loop with a EKWB block, it doesn't even feel like the same card anymore.

Every update yields better performance, I have already updated it 4 times and as new games come out that use RPM and the rasterizer, performance will continue to jump.

I'm happy with my V64 and R7 system, its good at gaming and is a beast at rendering/content creation.

Omg over 117 watts of difference between my GTX 1080 and the Vega 64. thats not worth it. 117 watts will make a huge difference of the electric bill. Il stick with my 1080. When are AMD going to learn about power efficiency?

krister olofsson AMD Ryzen is more efficient than intel.

They said i was stupid to buy a GTX 1080 instead of the unproven Vega 64, yet here we are..

You can say anything about Nvidia, that they overprice their GPU's, etc. But you've got to admit they know how to make graphics cards.

AMD needs to do a full rebrand or something, they haven’t been competitive in years and they have only themselves to blame their CEO is one of the WORST of any coronation, he only knows how to make hype on products that always fall flat and then blames Nvidia for being a competitive company and not giving them tech they made to compete. Some like Amd because they support “open source” properties but the only reason they do open sores is because they can’t afford to have proprietary assets. A lot of people also call Nvidia greedy and “evil” for not want to support AMD by giving them their tech they’ve made but to ignore the advancements they have made in other areas like A.I. And driverless cars is being an angry fan boy, people also like to parrot Nvidia is expensive, yeah a gou is relatively expensive but at least you get performance, wasn’t it AMD who made their cards artificially cheaper with an undisclosed discount at the launch of these cards? I just wish people would stop riding AMDs dick and realize they are behind for a reason, they cannot deliver then they blame the competition for “sabotage”. To compete I fully believe they need to fire the CEO and get someone who knows how to run a company because we need competition, shit maybe a new company can come into the picture and trade blows with Nvidia, because we all know AMD isn’t going to compete anytime soon. This issue isn’t just “due Nvidia bad, amd good”.

Have you tried underclocking Vega? Others are seeing significant improvement in framerates due to the lower thermals which on the standard clocked cards, experience thermal throttling due to high temps.

Too bad you didn't try undervolting...

My vega64 can undervolt from 1.2v @ 1750 to 1.125v stable which makes it run cooler and performs much better as well.
And there are plenty of people that can overclock their HBM. Mine is 100% stable at 1105 instead of 945 which give a nice additionnal performance boost.
And HBM overclock doesn't add much heat nor consumption..

Also when you compared vega64 to a furyX you should have clocked the HBM to 1000Mhz to be fairer.

It not normal you couldn't overclock the HBM.

Well.. i like AMD, they came rockin with the Ryzen arc... but gpu wise.. no man, i think they did not satisfy most of their cosumers. They mid range should be good, but the prices are inflated... so the only option is go with nvidia(if u hadnt bought the 500 series in the beginning, or the 400 series, wich is the one i have)

Vega 64 can beat the 1080. It's Achilles heel is it's tdp and reference cooler. With a 3rd party cooler it should perform much better. A good example is the water cooled version.

AMD is gonna have to make Vega 64x2 to beat 1080 Ti lol

Nice try AMD better look next time

Long live Nvidia

Yeah, I'd junk that Switch/Doom video, you had up, five minutes ago, too. First, Nintendo. Second, garbage.

😄 AMD = Another Major Disappointment

FACT: Worst thing ATI did was sell their GPU soul to debt dumb and R&D poor AMDevil, they used to be competitive but it's been all downhill for watt sucking Rebrandeon.

FACT: Best thing for ATI would be AMDevil goes BK and is forced to sell off ATI, no more debt dumb and R&D poor cred dead AMD monkey hanging on ATI's back.

My ps4pro fan is extremely loud when playing nba2k18 digital edition. It jet like loud when only playing this game. Please review nba 2k18

They shouldn't have chopped the memory bus width in half.

You should probably have also tested the card out on a Ryzen CPU.

Try with faster ram.

We also know the story with AMD. In a year or more like 2 years Vega 64 will finally start to get better and maybe even close in on the 1080Ti. But by then we are already WELL into the Volta lineup and might even be eyeballing the Volta successor and Navi about to be released and hence Vega will be beaten by a 1060 equivalent Volta almost. AMD "fine wine" drivers are the worst thing that could happen in the GPU market.

It has the same everything, except a higher clock speed but it now consumes even MORE power. Even though it is on a process essentially half the size and more efficient. AMD literally took a step backwards. There is nothing impressive about Vega. It is actually a straight up embarrassment. There is no doubt an 8GB Fury-x (if it could have that) and same ~1546-1676 (liquid cooled vega) would have the same performance or even better. But this is a NEW architecture. How did they manage to get WORSE performance per watt?? It is insanely bad. We all know Pascal is essentially a tweaked Maxwell in many ways, but it is better than Maxwell. A 1080Ti is way more efficient. It can beat a 980Ti with ease even being watt restricted to an amazing 120 watt (GTX 1060 levels), someone downclocked and lowered power to test it, less than half that of a 980Ti and it still wins with 980Ti STOCK clock speeds. Yes it has some 700 more cores. Yes Vega will with AMD "fine wine" drivers beat a 1080, but it will never be a good GPU. It is 16 months late, cost the same consume power like it is going out of style. AMD really needs to step their shit up in the GPU arena.

Great, now make a Vega 64 most stable overclock vs GTX1080 most stable overclock to add salt to the wound lol.
